House on Mango Street
In The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Esperanza is a young woman who grows up on Mango Street and has to learn to only depend on herself and get a good education so that she can become successful and follow her dreams. Esperanza’s story teaches young women that they do not need a man to live a satisfying life.
I like Esperanza’s story and I think that the House on Mango Street teaches very many important lessons to young women, but it was not my favorite book. It just did not have as much action as I typically like in a book.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian
In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The main character Junior is a freshman who lives on the Spokane Indian Reservation. He faces many struggles such as poverty, angry/ sad drunks, the loss of family and friends, troubles with his best friend Rowdy, etc. In the book he decides to switch to an all white school, twenty-two miles away from the reservation in search of hope and a better future. He gets rejected by his former friends for leaving the reservation, but continues to go forward and never give up.
I like this book because Junior is a courageous boy who has to face many conflicts that the average freshman does not usually have to go through. He goes from a shy boy who always depended on his friend to keep him safe from the tougher Indians to a young man who plays for the varsity basketball team and gains hope for his future.

The Art of Racing in The Rain
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is a story about a dog named Enzo and his owner, Denny, a race car driver who adopts him as a puppy. They have a special relationship that most wouldn’t understand. Enzo is Denny’s best friend. When Denny marries a woman named Eve, Enzo worries that she will replace him. As Enzo gets to know Eve more, they grow as a family including Denny and Eve’s daughter, Zoe. When Eve gets sick, the family must face many challenges. Throughout the book Enzo uses his love of racing to describe many situations he must go through in life.
I like this book because it has many conflicts that can be overcome by love and confidence. I also like that it is different than other books because it is told by the prospective of a dog.
