1. How did you measure the success of the work you did while you were an intern/working
on a project? What did you learn from this?
At the beginning of externship, it was really hard not to compare myself to my fellow interns. We all have had completely different work experiences and have different personalities. We took different approaches to various tasks and had different strengths. It is really easy for me to doubt myself. I over analyze everything that I say and do. This makes it harder to face any new situation. At first, I would've considered success to be doing everything perfectly the first time, never needing to ask questions, and making zero mistakes... which is not very reasonable. However, I learned that I am completely capable of taking on new tasks, with new people, in a new environment. Success isn't being perfect, but learning from my mistakes and asking questions so that I can grow and be better equipped for new challenges that come my way.
2. How did you make a meaningful contribution to your workplace/world/self?How was your work meaningful to your education/future?
The Hot Spot is a very creative place. Since I have a strong passion for art, I used the skills that I have to make an impact at externship. I wrote a new sign for the employees that helps them stay organized in the bagging process, I wrote all of the prices on succulents in the studio as well as the name of each kind of succulent so that the customers know how to take care of them when they returned home. I painted a sample pottery piece for the studio that gives the customers an idea of how they could paint their own pottery. And sometimes, pottery pieces break and chip in the kiln; so I repainted the parts that got messed up. This experience has contributed to my future as a student and an employee. I learned to ask questions and I gained skills that I can use in my future workplace.
3. How was your work significant or meaningful to the world beyond school and your specific internship site?
Throughout this month, I helped customers create beautiful artwork. Too many people believe that they aren't good at art, when in reality, a little bit of practice and learning new techniques can bring their artwork to a level they never believed that they could reach. I love art and want to share my passion with others. While working at the Hot Spot, I made an impact in other people's lives by assisting them in creating a beautiful piece for a friend, a loved one, or even for themselves.
4. What did you learn about your own work ethic from your externship?
I am really thorough in everything that I do. Whether it's sweeping the floor, cleaning the tables, recounting cash that I've already counted 4 times, painting 4 coats of paint when I only needed 3, the list could go on and on. I learned that this is one of my greatest strengths and weaknesses. Being thorough takes a lot of time, leaving less time to do other tasks. Being thorough also prevents mistakes and gives me a greater chance of creating a product that I am proud of.
